Pilar Corrias Gallery is delighted to present: ‘Mirrors and Windows’ – an exhibition of new work by the internationally acclaimed, Italian artist Patrick Tuttofuoco.

For his first exhibition at Pilar Corrias Gallery, Tuttofuoco has created a series of sculptures exploring the multiplicity of identity. Derived, in part, from the artist’s reading of Cameron West’s autobiographical account of dissociative identity disorder First Person Plural: My Life As A Multiple (1999), ‘Mirrors and Windows’ presents a series of innovatively imagined sculptural assemblages rendered in industrial materials and vibrant synthetic hues.

Whilst previous exhibitions of Tuttofuoco’s work have tended to explore the urban environment focusing on the social dynamics of cities and communities, and on collective endeavor, ‘Mirrors and Windows’ reverses the exploration of identity for which the artist is renowned. Deploying masks as a symbolic barrier between the self and the world, the exhibition turns to question the logic of the collective operating within the psyche of the individual. In a series of anthropomorphically titled sculptures, Tuttofuoco seeks to visualise the potential coexistence of multiple personalities whilst simultaneously exploring the human desire to transform one’s self into someone, or something else. Conceived as a cohesive ‘narrative’ whose beginning is indecipherable from its end; ‘Mirrors and Windows’ presents sculptures on the verge of morphing into protagonists in a hypothetical ‘story’ in which the identity of the viewer is implicit.

Patrick Tuttofuoco was born in Milan, Italy in 1974. Recent exhibitions of the artist’s work include Turn on: Contemporary Italian Art, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario (2009); Integration and Resistance in the Global Age, 10th Biennial of Havana (2009); Dandelion, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2008); Tales of Time and Space, Folkestone Triennial (2008); Musée d’Art Contemporain de Nimes (2007), and Revolving Landscape, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (2006). In 2003 Tuttofuoco was awarded the Premio Artegiovane by the Associazione Artegiovane, Turin. Patrick Tuttofuoco lives and works in Berlin.
