Charles Avery at the ICA, London

Charles Avery at the ICA, London

fig-2 presents 50 projects over 50 weeks in the ICA Studio, in association with Outset. fig-2 is a revival of the project fig-1, which was conceived and developed by Mark Francis and Jay Jopling in 2000. Experimental in its nature, each project was programmed only a few weeks in advance to maintain as much spontaneity as possible. fig-1 presented projects by Jeremy Deller, Richard Hamilton, Runa Islam, Oliver Payne and Nick Relph, Will Self, Patti Smith, Caruso St John and Philip Treacy, among others.

Fatoş Üstek, Art Fund Curator at fig-2, explains that: ‘fig-2‘s format utilises change as a constant. fig-2‘s structure of fifty successive exhibitions realised on a weekly basis operates as a catalyst to manifest the aesthetic and critical currency of our times. fig-2 will cultivate uncertainty and conscious incompleteness through each and every project that is driven by the radical imagination of artists, writers, dancers, architects, and designers’.

Charles Avery will realise the second of fifty exhibitions. His project at fig-2 unites different surfaces of reality through the collision of two and three dimensional forms, combining drawings, film and sculpture. Avery’s film uses dihedral figurations in motion that trace a pattern, which points to the constructs of time and space. This piece is a departure from Avery’s established practice, through the use of moving image and installation, which will be shown for the first time in the UK.
