Charles Avery participates in the Drawing Room’s Drawing making – Making drawing series, a sequence of talks, conversations, discussions, and workshops conceived of an devised by artist, writer, and educator Jack Southern. Since 2004 Scottish artist Charles Avery (Oban, 1973) has dedicated his practice to the description of a fictional island which he continues to elaborate with its own population, customs, philosophies, nature, and architecture expressed in the form of large-scale drawings, sculptures, installations, texts, and moving images. Avery’s most recent exploration was conveyed in a series of drawings in a collaborative project with Tom Morton, resulting in an exhibition entitled, ‘It Means It Means!” at Pilar Corrias Gallery. Created within a specific framework, this large body of work is rooted in Avery’s own life and upbringing on the Isle of Mull off the West cost of Scotland and could be interpreted as a philosophical meditation of art-making and different ideas of truth.
Additional artists contributing to the Drawing making – Making drawing series include: Dryden Goodwin, Cornelia Parker, Kate Atkin, Franziska Furter, Claude Heath, Tim Knowles, Martin Wilner, and Gemma Anderson, whose working practices, ideas, and thinking processes will form a vital anchor to the evolving dialogue fostered by the series.
