Philippe Parreno and Adam Thirlwell at Serpentine Galleries, London

Philippe Parreno and Adam Thirlwell at Serpentine Galleries, London

Novelist Adam Thirlwell presents a performance lecture, with special reference to the universal art of montage, interrupted by live conversations with artist Philippe Parreno.

What kind of new forms might be possible in literature and art? That’s the basic thought process behind this lecture-performance, where a lecture by the novelist Adam Thirlwell will examine the history of montage in as many media as possible (novels, theatre, film, you name it) in order to sketch one potential route to new ideas – but this lecture will also be interrupted by conversations with the artist Philippe Parreno: because it’s possible that not only will future art works need to develop wild varieties of interuption, but also that one particularly useful mode of interruption might be collaboration itself.

‘Epic theatre,’ wrote Walter Benjamin about Bertolt Brecht’s theatre, ‘does not reproduce conditions but, rather, reveals them. This uncovering of conditions is brought about through processes being interrupted.’ That’s what this event is all about.

Prior to the event, ticket-holders will have the rare opportunity to view the Leon Golub: Bite Your Tongue exhibition at night (open from 6:30pm).

Tickets £5 / £4 (conc.) available from Ticketweb or the Serpentine Galleries: +44 (0)207 402 6075
