In her video-installation Sink Down Mountain, Rise Up Valley, German-born and Paris-based artist Ulla von Brandenburg investigates the rituals of the Saint-Simonians, a nineteenth century cult often cited as the origin of early French socialism.
Presented in an intimate, bespoke setting specially designed by the artist, the film—captured in a single 18-minute shot—weaves an atmospheric black-and-white narrative of theatrical elements and choral arrangements that elaborates on Saint-Simonian humanist values of liberty, equality, and emancipation.
