The new performance programme “ROCKY” in Paradiso Noord features five interdisciplinary projects by international artists, musicians and choreographers who have created new performances or adapted existing ones to the specific context of a pop music venue. The makers challenge themselves, the context and the audience in various ways and using a variety of media. The context of the music venue is crucial to the successful presentation of the performances, both for the performer and the spectator. The performances invite such questions as: is this art, is this theatre, is this dance?
Visual artist Keren Cytter and the trio Akhila formed for this work (musicians David Aird, Akilah Freedstein and Keira Fox) introduce Vociferous, a performance disguised as an underground rave. Vociferous is a doomed love story that leaps between past, present and future to the rhythm of techno music, boredom, death and irritating high tones. Various stories are layered one on top of the other as the action unfolds between three projection screens. The multi-disciplinary performance seems perfectly at home in a music venue, with the band, video images, strobe lights and plenty of smoke, but can in no way be compared to any pop concert or the other work of Keren Cytter.
