Shahzia Sikander at Dhaka Art Summit 2014

Shahzia Sikander’s three channel, high-definition, animation Parallax from 2013 will be exhibited at the 2nd edition of Dhaka Art Summit, taking place in the coming year from February 7-9, 2014. In a programme curated by Diana Campbell Betancourt, Sikander was selected as one of the 14 solo art projects to be presented by internationally celebrated artists from South Asia. This is the first of the artist’s works to be exhibited in Bangladesh.

Although originally commissioned for the Sharjah Biennale in 2013, Parallax also invokes a particular resonance with Dhaka through the migration patterns of their relatives, as Sharjah’s labor force is comprised of a significant population of Bangladeshis. Focusing on Sharjah’s unique location at the Strait of Hormuz, and the area’s historical power tensions, Parallax is inspired by the idea of conflict and control. Visual vocabulary is culled from drawings and paintings to construct the animation, giving the motifs and symbols a shifting identity as they come together to cultivate new associations within the digital space. The soundtrack was composed by Sikander’s frequent collaborator, Du Yun.

Additional artists contributing to the solo project programme include: Lida Abdul, Rathin Barman, Rana Begum, Shilpa Gupta, Runa Islam, Jitish Kallat, Tayeba Begum Lipi, Naeem Mohaiemen, Tsherin Sherpa, Asim Waqif, Mahbubur Rahman, Rashid Rana, and Mithu Sen.
