Tobias Rehberger at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

Tobias Rehberger at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

Exhibiting a combination of older as well as recent works, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is mounting the first extensive exhibition of Frankfurt-based artist, Tobias Rehberger’s oeuvre to be presented in the city of Frankfurt. The selection of works pursues the goal of reflecting the function of art and its use – a major theme in Rehberger’s creative output. The exhibition, entitled Home and Away and Outside, is distributed over three gallery spaces, beginning with a visually unsettling, colorfully appealing Gesamtkunstwerk: a dazzle camouflage taken from military strategy seizes the floor, walls, and ceiling and forces itself into the space. The optical illusion of the all-over coat of paint is intensified by its combination with paintings and sculptures, which Rehberger uses in this way for the first time. While this setting is dominated by an overstimulation of perception, the second part of the exhibition takes the viewer by surprise with its academic integrity and a concentrated selection of applied and functional works of art that reveal Rehberger’s concept of sculpture as it had defined his works since the 1990s. The third part of the exhibition is located in the Schirn’s rotunda, for which the artist developed a large-scale, site-specific work.
