Ulla von Brandenburg at CEAAC, Strasbourg

Ulla von Brandenburg will be included in the group exhibition Rose, the first of a trilogy curated by Elodie Royer and Yoann Gourmel at the Centre Européen d’Actions Artistiques Contemporaines (CEAAC) for the 2014 – 2015 season.

Each chapter of this series of three connected exhibitions is titled after the name of a fictional character from literature, three characters of seemingly “ageless” children: Rose, Seymour and Ernesto, respectively imagined by Gertrude Stein, J.D. Salinger and Marguerite Duras. Within these “portrait-exhibitions”, they are considered as points of departure, as “conceptual characters” to discuss the works of the invited artists. Each of these three exhibitions will thus aim at proposing some kind of portraits of these characters in a specific atmosphere devised in relation to each of them and to the works of the invited artists.

The first in the trilogy, Roseis an exhibition conceived as an intuitive adventure on the discovery of the world, the language of forms and the forms of language inspired by Gertrude Stein’s 1939, “The World is Round.” It will gather artworks of which elementary forms often inherited by minimal and conceptual art are at the same time loaded with affect and feelings. Echoing the style of Gertrude Stein, these works tend to seize the essence of their subjects with the minimum of elements but their apparent simplicity leaves it open for multiple meanings and interpretations. Other exhibited artists include: Etel Adnan, Guy de Cointet, Ryan Gander, Joseph Grigely, Daniel Linehan, Barbara and Michael Leisgen, and Jean-Luc Moulène.
